All About Saga…
Saga Miniature Wargame
What is Wargaming?
Miniature wargaming is like chess in that it uses various figures which each have different properties and is played on a board that represents a battle field. However, Wargaming is different in that it uses miniatures on a larger board that has terrain features which can affect the game. The game mechanics are different and dice are used to determine the outcome of engagements which are usually altered by game effects as well.
Saga…
Saga is a miniature wargame that uses historical warbands. It has a core set of rules that determine troop characteristics, movement, shooting and melee interactions in addition to other concepts. The core rules are fairly simple to learn but have flavor and complexity when combined with the unique abilities of each historical faction. Saga is a visual game. Figures in Saga are 28 mm scaled miniatures. The board is 3 feet by 4 feet and has various terrain features that affect the game. Skirmishes are determined by dice rolls, but modified by game effects, particularly the abilities of each faction’s Battle Board. The goal is to win the objectives or the battle by outwitting your opponent and eliminating more of their troops.
Time Periods…
Factions are grouped by historical time periods, or Age, and represents the cultures of the time period. For example, Age of Viking has factions such as the Vikings and Scots, but also the Carolingians, or Last Romans. It’s the factions that add character and flavor to the game. The faction you choose to play determines the troops you have to choose from and how you build your warband. Additionally, each faction has a Battle Board, or a unique set of abilities that represent the fighting style of the faction. The basic and advanced abilities are used to execute your battle strategy, outwit your opponent, and win the battle. See below for more information about each Age.
